@2:30, pause the video. Look at the bottom row of tiles on the backdrop, just to the right of the camera box. Notice that they are uneven! And not only that, but the moment David steps backward, pause it and see how there is stark contrast in the tile brightness between the upper portion and the lower segment.
Now, look up at the design on the wall. Notice how the backdrop has vertical symmetry? Follow the line of symmetry down. See how the two second-row center tiles are off? There’s a black bar “magically” missing. Later @3:26 it’s “magically” reappeared! Well, surprise surprise, that’s no coincidence.
Some other guy who comments on a bunch of David Copperfield’s videos clued me in on the secret. Bill Page (nothing against him) seems to leave lots of weird, unintelligible replies. Oh well. But one thing he mentioned was a “mirror tunnel,” a tunnel that’s covered with mirrors to reflect the backdrop of a stage. The backdrop must be uniform for it to work, like the backdrop of tiles in this video. The “mirror tunnel” is a thing, it actually exists, and it is used by stage illusionists.
So, what’s the coincidence? It’s the mirror tunnel. It’s employed in some stage illusions, particularly in one called “The Million Dollar Mystery.” Also, Copperfield used it in “Big Black Box,” performed on this exact same stage. The video of that is uploaded elsewhere on Youtube if you care to take a look at it. The mirror tunnel is generally used in tricks where a small box is shown to be empty. Then lots of people, even an animal or two, who could not have possibly fit inside, come out of the box.
Anyhow, back to the trick. The mirror tunnel, as you might guess, is used to conceal the fact that the camera is wheeled backstage, behind the backdrop.
Alright, we’ve established the mirror tunnel. What about the camera? Well, @2:30 pay close attention to how David removes the front cover. The small video shows his right hand well lit up, even though his head is directly in front of the camera. What’s going on? The light on the right side has a built in camera! For further proof, check @3:38 and notice how David readjusts his position by stepping to his right. That’s so he’ll be in front of the camera.
And that, my friends, is not how you do a camera trick. Oh no, that’s how you do a trick with a camera!
